A recent feature on NPR’s “All Tech Considered” show explored the evolution of how “job seekers” today are marketing themselves, their skills, and where they are finding jobs. In light of the current economic realities, there are larger numbers of Americans in the job market, and the savy seeker is finding ways to get ahead of the competition.
Bottom line is that the technologically well versed have an advantage in the pursuit for limited jobs. A few examples, from NPR, of ways to gain an advantage using technology were video resumes, website resumes and web references. When done right, these tools can do a better job of telling your ”story,” and detailing your skill set that makes you a better catch. I thought the idea of web refrences was particulary interesting. Basically, use videos of your references telling the story about why they would hire you again and again, and post these on your resume website. Pretty cool.
The show also talked about something that the Local Eye Site community already knows about…niche job board sites. The show pointed out that the massive job board sites that we all know by name are too generalized. I founded LES because I’m passionate about providing the eye care job seeker and employer both with a community destination that provides the employer a greater likelihood of finding experienced candidates, and the job seeker in finding jobs in their field…with less headaches.
